【Spain Balear】Spanish Police Seize 40 kg of Illegal Hyaluronic Acid in Ibiza and Mallorca; Three Arrested, Seven Doctors Under Investigation

Buyer note

This report highlights a significant supply-chain risk for legitimate distributors, as the network sourced unapproved hyaluronic acid from Asia without EU certification. The sourcing signal—opaque channels bypassing official European distributors—underscores the need for buyers to demand full traceability and CE documentation to avoid regulatory and safety pitfalls.

Spanish National Police have dismantled a criminal network operating through a chain of aesthetic clinics in Ibiza and Mallorca, seizing 40 kilograms of illegally imported hyaluronic acid mixed with lidocaine. The product, sourced from Asia without European Union certification, was used in routine aesthetic procedures, raising serious safety concerns for patients and highlighting supply-chain risks for legitimate distributors.

## Operation details

On April 28, coordinated raids across nine clinics in Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Seville, Malaga, Bilbao, Almendralejo, and the Balearic Islands led to the arrest of three company executives and the investigation of seven licensed doctors. Police confiscated 278 medical devices and the remaining stock of unapproved filler products from storage facilities.

## Illegal sourcing and distribution

The network bypassed official European distributors by purchasing hyaluronic acid directly from Asian suppliers through opaque channels. This allowed the clinics to drastically reduce costs for high-demand treatments while maintaining a facade of legitimacy with proper facilities and qualified medical staff. The products lacked CE marking and any authorization for subcutaneous use in the EU.

## Products and procedures involved

The seized materials were intended for non-surgical aesthetic procedures including lip injections, cheek augmentation, chin projection, tear trough correction, non-surgical rhinoplasty, and nasolabial fold treatment. Each session lasted 20-45 minutes, and because the hyaluronic acid is absorbable over 6-18 months, patients became repeat customers for the unregulated product.

## Regulatory and channel signals

This case underscores the growing risk of counterfeit or unapproved aesthetic products entering the European market through seemingly legitimate clinic chains. For distributors and importers, it highlights the importance of verifying supply-chain integrity and ensuring all products carry valid CE certification. The investigation remains open, with authorities reviewing medical records from the Ibiza and Mallorca branches.

## What buyers should watch

Aesthetic buyers and clinic operators should demand full traceability for all injectable products, including batch numbers and EU conformity documentation. The Spanish health authorities recommend that patients insist on seeing the vial opened in their presence before any procedure. This incident may prompt stricter enforcement of import controls and penalties for clinics using unauthorized products.
