Medical Tourism Gaining Ground in El Salvador

Medical tourism continues to gain ground within El Salvador’s tourism offerings. According to data from the Salvadoran Tourism Corporation (Corsatur), approximately 3% of visitors to the country travel with the aim of undergoing specialized medical treatments, primarily from the United States and Canada.

Corsatur’s Executive Director, Alejandra Durán, explained that this modality combines medical care with the tourism experience, allowing patients to receive treatment while temporarily staying in the country.

“Medical tourism is the result of combining tourism—because you sleep in a place where you don’t live—and, on top of that, you undergo some treatment,” the official explained.

Durán highlighted that among the services most in demand by international visitors are dentistry, plastic and aesthetic surgery, bariatric surgery, ophthalmology, and other specialized medical procedures—areas in which El Salvador has strengthened its offerings in recent years.

During the “Boosting Medical Tourism” event organized by ProSalud Medical Center, Corsatur’s director stated that the country seeks to consolidate itself as a regional benchmark in this industry by integrating high-quality health services with the national tourism offering.

“Today, El Salvador not only opens its doors as a vibrant destination of culture, nature, and hospitality, but it also firmly positions itself as a center of excellence in medical and wellness tourism in the region. Health tourism is not just the combination of medicine and travel; it is, above all, a promise of trust and tranquility,” Durán expressed.

The meeting brought together representatives from the health, tourism, and business sectors with the aim of strengthening alliances to expand development opportunities for medical tourism and attract a greater number of international patients.
