【South Korea】K-Beauty Expands Its Appeal Among International Tourists Visiting South Korea

Editor’s Note

This article explores how the global rise of K-Beauty content on social media is reshaping travel trends, with more tourists seeking medical and cosmetic services alongside traditional sightseeing in Korea.

Thanks to beauty content on YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok, young people worldwide are increasingly familiar with Korean skincare products, beauty clinics, and cosmeceuticals. As a result, many tourists are planning trips that combine sightseeing with visits to these clinics and beauty facilities.

For many years, K-Beauty has been understood as a term referring to Korean cosmetics. Tourists visiting Korea used to habitually fill their suitcases with sheet masks, skincare products, and makeup items on each trip. However, in recent years, more and more tourists are booking appointments at dermatology clinics, receiving scalp treatments, getting personalized color advice, visiting pharmacies, and participating in health and wellness programs to improve both their appearance and lifestyle.
This growing demand reflects the strong growth of health tourism, which aims to improve physical and mental well-being. In South Korea, this trend is particularly pronounced, with special travel packages that combine medical technology, beauty services, and lifestyle experiences, which are rarely found in other countries.

According to industry experts, social media is one of the key factors driving the medical tourism boom.

“Luxury goods are always attractive, but Korean pharmaceuticals and health-related products are also famous for their high quality. Now, pharmacy hopping has become one of the reasons I come to Korea.”

This trend is reflected in the changes within the K-Beauty industry itself. Tourists are no longer focusing solely on high-end cosmetic brands; they are increasingly interested in the Korean lifestyle and daily health and wellness habits, which creates new business opportunities for retailers.
Notably, the appeal of beauty and health tourism is no longer limited to Seoul but is spreading to many other regions. According to data from the Korea Tourism Organization (KTO), spending by foreign tourists on beauty and health-related services in the first quarter increased by 38.4% year-on-year, while spending on medical tourism also rose by 33.2%. Beauty and health-related services are now one of the main drivers of South Korea’s medical tourism industry. This growth indicates that foreign tourists are increasingly willing to spend money on experiences, not just products.
