【Italy】Aesthetic Medicine: A Blend of Naturalness, Science and Innovation

Editor’s Note

**Editor’s Note:** The SIME Congress signals a pivotal shift in aesthetic medicine: away from excess and toward diagnosis, safety, and personalization. The emerging “Quiet Beauty” trend champions a more authentic, mindful approach—prioritizing natural, regenerative outcomes over volume.

Aesthetic medicine is changing direction: fewer excesses, more diagnosis, safety and personalisation. This is the central message of the latest SIME (Italian Society of Aesthetic Medicine) Congress. At its heart lies a new concept of beauty that is more authentic and mindful.

Quiet Beauty and Regenerative Trends
“The beauty trends for 2026 say ‘no’ to excessive volume and ‘yes’ to natural, regenerative and personalised results,” explains Emanuele Bartoletti, president of SIME. “‘Quiet Beauty’ and regenerative medicine represent a global trend, enthusiastically embraced by people who are increasingly focused on improving skin quality rather than altering their features. The aim is no longer to change one’s face, but to improve skin quality, slow down the ageing process and work at a deeper level. It almost seems counterintuitive in a sector often associated with quick results. And yet, this is where it all begins. Understanding before treating. Assessing before intervening. A simple yet revolutionary principle. It forms the basis for offering programmes tailored to the individual patient, rather than the classic standardised treatments that create impersonal clones.”

Key topics also include artificial intelligence applied to diagnosis, skin longevity, cellular health and combined treatment protocols, including a proper beauty routine to follow at home. From non-surgical facelifts to injectable skin boosters and biostimulation, the aim is to achieve a noticeable yet gradual improvement without anyone realising you’ve had a ‘touch-up’. One of the most significant re-evaluations in recent times concerns the overuse of fillers. Filling does not mean treating the skin properly.
We need to look at the whole face, rather than simply treating the specific problem. Ultrasound is playing an increasingly important role in making injections more precise and safer, and in managing any complications. The conference also addressed the relationship between aesthetic medicine and social media, challenging unrealistic promises and content lacking a scientific basis. The aim is to promote transparent communication, backed by verifiable studies and sources.
Safety remains the decisive criterion: from product traceability to the management of complications, right through to the responsible use of dermal fillers and botulinum toxins. In this regard, the key new provision in the Ministry of Health’s circular of 11 May 2026 reiterates that injectable fillers are medical devices and that their use constitutes a genuine medical procedure. They cannot therefore be regarded as mere cosmetic products nor be intended for self-administration. Pharmacies, parapharmacies and online retailers will be required to verify that the purchaser is a qualified healthcare professional, thereby limiting indiscriminate sales. The measure stems from reports of DIY purchases and treatments carried out by unauthorised individuals.

Hyaluronic Acid: From Radiance to Bespoke Volume

Fillers are increasingly in demand, with hyaluronic acid remaining the leading treatment for restoring volume and a fresh, youthful appearance, as well as improving skin quality. babyGLOW™, the new treatment protocol from Teoxane, is designed to meet this need by restoring radiance and a fresh, youthful appearance in a natural and gradual way. The new protocol, based on free hyaluronic acid combined with a dermo-complex containing amino acids, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals, is designed to enhance radiance. Seventy BG has launched Regenyal IDEA Lips and Regenyal IDEA Super Lips, two complementary fillers designed to personalise lip treatments. IDEA Lips offers a subtle and gradual result, improving hydration and definition. IDEA Super Lips, which is more cross-linked and structured, allows for greater volume, projection and eversion, making it suitable for correcting even the most noticeable asymmetries.
