【Seville, Spa】University of Sevilla Turns Red Crab Shells into Bioplastics for Medicine and Cosmetics

The University of Sevilla is converting red crab shells into bioplastics for medicine and cosmetics. This research opens new avenues to utilize tons of red crab waste from the Bajo Guadalquivir region. What was once an environmental problem could become an opportunity for the industry.

From Crab to Cosmetics Through Chemistry

The project, developed by experts in Chemical Engineering, extracts chitin from the shells—a natural polymer found in the exoskeletons of crustaceans and insects. From this, researchers obtain chitosan, a biodegradable and biocompatible material considered one of the most promising compounds in the bioeconomy.

“Our project consists of taking advantage of this waste and, through chemical processes in a reactor, transforming it into chitin, which is the basis of this biopolymer called chitosan,” explains Professor of Chemical Engineering at the University of Sevilla, Nuria Calero.
A “Smart Vehicle” for Releasing Active Ingredients

One of the most notable properties of chitosan is its ability to act as a controlled release system for active compounds. In other words, it functions as a “smart vehicle” capable of transporting and releasing certain substances in a stable and gradual manner. This characteristic opens the door to multiple applications. Researchers are working on incorporating it into edible products, functional beverages, cosmetic creams, and even dressings and biomedical materials. Among the research lines, formulations aimed at alleviating symptoms associated with menopause or the premenstrual period also stand out. The active ingredients used have antioxidant properties and could contribute to hormonal balance and women’s well-being.

An Opportunity for Circular Economy in the Doñana Area

The red crab industry has a long tradition in the Bajo Guadalquivir region since its establishment in the 1980s. Currently, annual production is around 5,000 tons, an economic activity especially important in municipalities near the Doñana area. However, about 70% of each specimen ends up as waste, mainly in the form of shells. Its management represents a significant environmental challenge, as these organic remains require specific treatments to avoid accumulation and pollution problems. The University of Sevilla’s research proposes a solution based on the circular economy: converting a difficult-to-manage waste into a high-value-added raw material for sectors as diverse as pharmaceuticals, food, and cosmetics. Additionally, chitosan is attracting growing international interest for other properties, including its antimicrobial capacity, biodegradability, and potential for manufacturing sustainable packaging and materials for tissue regeneration.

The Challenge: Moving from Lab to Industry

Although the results obtained are promising, the next step will be to scale the process to make it viable at an industrial level.

“Chemical Engineering has an important challenge, which is the change of scale. For now, these investigations are in a prototype phase and we hope they can make the leap from the laboratory to industry,” highlights Nuria Calero.

If the project is consolidated, Andalusia could position itself at the forefront of the valorization of fishery and agri-food waste, demonstrating that innovation and sustainability can go hand in hand. An example of how science can find in a simple crab shell a true biological mine for the future of medicine and the primary sector.
