Daewoong Pharmaceutical has announced an upgraded distribution management system to curb illegal trade of its botulinum toxin product, Nabota, reinforcing patient safety through stricter online and offline oversight.

Daewoong Pharmaceutical announced on the 23rd that it has strengthened its authentic product distribution management system to block the illegal distribution of its botulinum toxin ‘Nabota’ and ensure patient safety.

Enhanced Distribution Management System

Daewoong Pharmaceutical operates an online and offline authentic product distribution management network. Since January of this year, it has introduced a system that permanently suspends transactions upon detection of illegal distribution. The company has distributed informational materials to domestic hospitals and clinics and has completed revisions to contracts to prevent illegal distribution.

Furthermore, through a recent report from a local partner, the company confirmed the unauthorized removal of two vials of domestically-marketed Nabota. By tracking the manufacturing lot numbers, the specific medical institution was identified, and transaction suspension measures were implemented.

Clarification on FDA Import Refusal

Daewoong Pharmaceutical explained that the recently confirmed cases of U.S. FDA import refusal are unrelated to its official export products. A company official stated:

“Official export products comply with FDA regulations and have no history of import refusal. However, products brought into the U.S. through abnormal channels have been found to lack English labels or have not received New Drug Application (NDA) approval.”

Cold Chain Management for Biological Products

Botulinum toxin is a biological product where temperature control is critical. Daewoong Pharmaceutical operates a cold chain system throughout the entire process from production to administration. The company utilizes passive containers that maintain optimal temperature for up to 168 hours and active containers with built-in cooling devices, managing a stable distribution environment through real-time temperature tracking.

Call for Government Cooperation

Daewoong Pharmaceutical emphasized that, alongside its corporate-level management efforts, cooperation from government authorities is necessary to eradicate illegal distribution. Earlier this year, the company reported seven domestic companies that received FDA warning letters for illegal distribution of botulinum toxin to relevant authorities, continuing its response efforts.

Park Sung-soo, CEO of Daewoong Pharmaceutical, stated:

“As Nabota’s cumulative sales have surpassed 1 trillion won and its presence in the global market has grown, attempts at illegal distribution are also increasing. For patient safety, we ask for the attention and active support of government authorities.”
