**Editor’s Note:** This article highlights growing concerns over the safety and regulatory oversight of injectable ECM tissue grafts used in cosmetic skin booster procedures. A forthcoming symposium aims to address these gaps and advocate for stronger safety verification measures.
The Korean Medical Bio Journalists Association announced on the 24th that it will hold a symposium titled “Discussing the Regulatory Vacuum for Injectable ECM Tissue Grafts – The Need for Safety Verification” on July 28 at the Korea Press Center in Jung-gu, Seoul.
This comes as human-derived extracellular matrix (ECM) tissue grafts are increasingly used in injectable skin booster procedures for cosmetic purposes, raising the need for safety management standards and regulatory improvements regarding direct skin injection methods.
During the keynote presentations, Professor Shin Hyun-young from the Department of Family Medicine at Seoul St. Mary’s Hospital will speak on “Clinical Safety and Policy Direction of Injectable ECM Tissue Grafts,” while Attorney Im Won-taek from MUNJANG Law Firm will present on “The Legislative Intent of the Human Tissue Act and Legal Issues Arising from Changes in Administration Routes.”
The symposium is designed to evaluate the clinical safety and risks of skin injection methods using human-derived ECM tissue grafts in cosmetic and skin booster applications, and to discuss institutional improvements to address regulatory gaps under the Human Tissue Act.
A comprehensive discussion session will follow, moderated by Professor Yang Sung-il of Seoul National University Bundang Hospital. Panelists include Professor Lee Jong-hee (Department of Dermatology, Samsung Medical Center), Professor Bae Ha-seok (Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, Ewha Womans University Mokdong Hospital), Professor Lee Won-jae (Department of Plastic Surgery, Severance Hospital), Professor Lee Ji-yoon (Department of Pharmacy, Chung-Ang University), Yoo Mi-hwa (Standing Representative, GCN Green Consumer Network), Reporter Im Tae-kyun (Yakjagongron), and Im Sang-woo (Team Leader, Advanced Biopharmaceuticals TF, Ministry of Food and Drug Safety).
