【Mexico】Martí Batres Highlights Strengthening of ISSSTE’s Primary Care Level with ‘La Clínica es Nuestra’

Editor’s Note

**Editor’s Note:** This article highlights ISSSTE Director General Martí Batres Guadarrama’s presentation on the progress of the *La Clínica es Nuestra* program, detailing upgrades in infrastructure, medical supplies, and services across primary and select secondary care units.

Program Overview and Impact

Martí Batres Guadarrama, Director General of the Institute of Security and Social Services for State Workers (ISSSTE), presented a balance of the scope and transformation in infrastructure, medical supplies, and other services acquired or renewed in primary care units and some secondary care units under the program La Clínica es Nuestra.

“The program La Clínica es Nuestra came as a blessing to ISSSTE. I remember when in 2012 (…) I went to affiliate with ISSSTE. (…) People told me, there are no thermometers, no blood pressure monitors, nothing. Now, with La Clínica es Nuestra, which is applied in all primary care units, people, in a self-managed way, can acquire the equipment they need,” he highlighted.

Expansion in 2025 and 2026

In this regard, the Director General detailed that in 2025, the first year of this program at ISSSTE, 562 clinics benefited, and in 2026, the scope increased to 633 medical units of primary care and some mixed units, such as Clinic Hospitals (CH) or Family Medicine Clinics with Specialties and Operating Room (CMFEQ).

“We have already been with La Clínica es Nuestra for two years. Last year was the first major exercise, we benefited 562 medical units. This year (…) we are benefiting 633 medical units of primary care and mixed primary and secondary care. (…) This transforms ISSSTE and especially transforms our primary care,” he stated.

Medical Supplies and Equipment Acquired

Martí Batres highlighted that, with the designated budget, the beneficiaries themselves have decided which medical supplies to acquire according to their clinic’s needs, such as thermometers, glucometers, oximeters, suture scissors or stitch removers, curettage trays, Pasteur tables, negatoscopes, examination tables, wheelchairs, portable X-rays, dental autoclaves and autoclaves for curettage equipment, diagnostic kits, fetal dopplers, and standing blood pressure monitors, among others.

Infrastructure and Accessibility Improvements

Furthermore, he emphasized that the resources are not only allocated to the purchase of medical supplies; refrigerators for the cold chain of medicines and vaccines, and even complete dental units have also been acquired. He also noted that some clinics have built a space to install their laboratory, for telemedicine, or to integrate an additional consultation room, and have renovated bathrooms, installed roofs and ramps for people with disabilities, in order to facilitate access to the clinic for older adults or those with reduced mobility.
These actions are carried out by ISSSTE as part of the vision of well-being and renewal of the public health system led by President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, in the Second Floor of the Fourth Transformation.
