【China】Foreign Tourists Flock to China for Beauty Treatments

Editor’s Note

**Editor’s Note:** This article examines China’s growing appeal as a destination for medical tourism, highlighting its competitive pricing, skilled doctors, and emphasis on natural-looking results. As the country positions itself to rival South Korea in the aesthetic treatment market, patient testimonials underscore a shift in global beauty standards.

China’s Natural Beauty Philosophy Attracts Global Visitors

Thanks to the expertise of its doctors, competitive prices, and a “natural” beauty philosophy, China is increasingly attracting foreign tourists seeking aesthetic treatments and is considered capable of competing with South Korea.

“The advice was exactly what I wanted. That’s why I decided to go to China,” said Lee, a South Korean tourist who initially considered facial reshaping surgery but was advised against it by a Chinese doctor, who suggested a less invasive lifting method instead.

Like Lee, many South Korean women have recently traveled to China for cosmetic surgery. They are drawn by China’s unique beauty philosophy, which prioritizes natural beauty over radical facial transformations.

Expert Insights on Market Trends

Linda Yu, General Manager of marketing agency Red Ant, noted that compared to surgical trends in South Korea and Japan, where aesthetic results are often more “refined and curated,” China “combines both aspects and places even greater emphasis on self-confidence and individuality.” According to Yu, today’s clients no longer chase “internet celebrity faces” but “prefer” aesthetic procedures that “optimize, enhance, and preserve” their unique features.

A survey published last year by e-commerce platform Meituan showed that 43% of 1,000 people who had undergone cosmetic surgery in China wished to preserve their natural facial features. “China’s natural beauty standards are attracting more foreign clients. Chinese doctors are increasingly recognized for their clinical expertise and extensive professional experience,” Yu added.

Clinic Growth and Service Demand

For example, aesthetic medicine clinics, especially in Shanghai, attract tourists by focusing on preserving “Oriental beauty” while adhering to international aesthetic standards. Treatments ranging from dermal fillers and facial reshaping to ultrasound skin tightening are increasingly in demand among international clients. Some clinics report a 10-20% increase in international clients, primarily from South Korea, Japan, and Southeast Asian countries, over the past two years.

Market Size and Growth

Estimates indicate that China’s aesthetic medicine industry was worth over 311 billion RMB (approximately 46 billion USD) in 2023 and is expected to reach 1.3 trillion RMB by 2030. During the recent Lunar New Year holiday alone, foreign tourists’ spending on aesthetic services in China doubled compared to the previous year, making it one of the fastest-growing sectors.

Competitive Landscape and Policy Support

Nevertheless, South Korea remains the world’s leading destination for cosmetic surgery. This achievement is not accidental but rather the result of a carefully planned national strategy. Seoul has integrated K-pop with relaxed visa policies, immediate tax refunds for cosmetic surgery procedures, and the implementation of on-site translation services at clinics.

To enhance its competitiveness, China now allows visa-free entry for citizens of 50 countries and has extended its 10-day visa-free transit program to 65 border crossings. In the first quarter of 2026, the country recorded 8.3 million visa-free entries for foreigners, a 29.3% increase compared to the same period last year.
