Editor's note

This visit, covered by official government channels, signals to buyers that South Korea is elevating beauty-tech to a national strategic industry. The regulatory question is whether this will accelerate approvals for device-based products. Supply-chain risk remains low given Kolmar's global production network, but buyers should watch for policy shifts that could create new opportunities.

South Korea’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Finance, Koo Yoon-cheol, visited Kolmar Korea’s Integrated Technology Institute on March 28, underscoring the government’s push to elevate K-beauty from a consumer goods sector to a national strategic industry. The visit signals stronger public-private collaboration in beauty-tech, a development that overseas buyers and distributors should watch for potential regulatory shifts and innovation pipelines.

Government signals strategic support for beauty-tech

Deputy PM Koo, accompanied by Food and Drug Safety Minister Oh Yu-kyung and officials from the Ministry of Economy and Finance, Ministry of Health and Welfare, Ministry of SMEs and Startups, and the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, toured Kolmar’s integrated R&D center in Seocho-gu, Seoul. The facility houses over 700 researchers and consolidates labs for cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and health functional foods. Technologies developed here are applied across Kolmar’s production sites in Sejong, Bucheon, China, the U.S., and Canada.

Kolmar’s innovation credentials draw high-level attention

The visit highlights Kolmar’s recent recognition in beauty-tech. In early 2026, Kolmar became the first beauty company to win the Best Innovation Award at CES 2026 in Las Vegas. The company’s integrated R&D approach—combining AI, data, and device technology—aligns with the government’s vision for K-beauty as a future strategic industry.

Official statements on industry evolution

Deputy PM Koo stated, “K-beauty is now evolving beyond the cosmetics industry into a future strategic industry where AI, data, and devices converge. The public and private sectors will together open a new era where Korea creates and the world follows.”

Yoon Sang-hyun, Vice Chairman of Kolmar Group, added, “For K-beauty to sustain growth, we must complete an ecosystem where star brands can continuously emerge. Kolmar will do its utmost for the sustainable success and development of K-beauty.”

What buyers should watch

For overseas importers and distributors, this visit signals that South Korea’s government is actively backing beauty-tech innovation, which may lead to faster regulatory approvals for new device-based beauty products and increased R&D investment. Kolmar’s integrated R&D and global production network positions it as a key partner for brands seeking cutting-edge formulations and device-integrated beauty solutions. Buyers should monitor upcoming policy announcements and Kolmar’s product launches for potential supply-chain opportunities.
