Editor's note

This report draws on KOTRA's official strategy shift, signaling to medical aesthetics buyers that Europe is now a critical alternative to US-China trade routes. The regulatory question is whether Korean cosmetics and pharmaceuticals can navigate EU standards as exports surge. Supply-chain risks include dependency on European restructuring for core materials.

KOTRA, the Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency, is restructuring its European strategy as the region becomes a key base for Korea's new export growth industries. For medical aesthetics buyers, this signals expanding opportunities in K-beauty, pharmaceuticals, and advanced manufacturing, with Europe now Korea's third-largest consumer goods export market and a critical alternative to US-China trade routes.

K-Beauty exports surge in Europe

Europe ranked as Korea's third-largest consumer goods export market in 2025, after China and North America. Last year, Korean consumer goods exports to Europe reached $8.4 billion, up 18% year-on-year. Cosmetics exports showed particularly strong growth. Poland became Korea's top-growing cosmetics export destination for two consecutive years, with increases of 162% in 2024 and 112% in 2025. France also saw Korean cosmetics imports rise 73% last year, surpassing $100 million for the first time.

KOTRA's targeted strategy for medical aesthetics buyers

KOTRA has designated lead and partner trade offices for five key consumer goods categories—food, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, fashion, and household goods—to launch joint marketing campaigns. The agency aims to boost consumer goods exports by 30%. It will also run "K-Beauty Export Boom Weeks" in Madrid and London, regions with strong Hallyu fan bases, and organize pop-up stores and export consultations linked to K-pop concerts to connect with consumers and identify buyers.

Growth industries: pharmaceuticals, energy, and defense

In pharmaceuticals, European markets now dominate Korea's top export destinations after the US. Switzerland, Hungary, and the Netherlands ranked second through fourth in 2025. Exports to Switzerland surged from $120 million in 2019 to $1.28 billion last year. KOTRA plans to leverage major European bio and pharma exhibitions to help Korean companies enter these markets, citing opportunities from healthcare modernization, supply chain diversification, and rising K-bio awareness.

Supply chain and investment opportunities

European companies are restructuring supply chains for core materials and components amid economic security and diversification policies. This creates demand for Korean firms strong in future mobility, batteries, robotics, and AI transformation. KOTRA will identify key materials and components needed by European manufacturers, support Korean suppliers' entry into supply chains, and expand joint R&D and product sourcing. In September, it will host a "GP Europe Future Mobility Consultation" targeting European automakers.

What buyers should watch

For medical aesthetics importers and distributors, the key signals are: (1) Poland and France are emerging as high-growth entry points for Korean cosmetics, with double-digit annual increases; (2) KOTRA's coordinated marketing and trade show participation will increase Korean product visibility and availability; (3) European regulatory complexity, while challenging, can serve as a competitive advantage for Korean suppliers seeking to expand globally. Buyers should monitor KOTRA's upcoming events and connect with designated trade offices for sourcing opportunities.
