South Korea's pharmaceutical, biotech, and cosmetics sectors are rallying in tandem, driven by record technology exports and accelerating global market penetration. For overseas buyers and distributors, this signals growing opportunities in ADC platforms, diversified beauty categories, and expanded offline retail access in the U.S. and Europe.
Market signal
On July 9, Korean pharma and biotech stocks rose sharply, buoyed by expectations of further technology licensing deals in the second half of the year. Industry data shows that domestic biotech firms have surpassed 13 trillion won in cumulative technology export value, reflecting strong global demand for antibody-drug conjugate (ADC) and platform technologies. Analysts note that the total milestone payments from licensing deals so far this year have reached about 62% of last year's annual figure, raising the possibility of a new record if pending deals close.
Regulatory and channel signals
K-beauty exports hit a record $11.4 billion in 2025, making South Korea the world's second-largest cosmetics exporter, overtaking the United States. Growth is broadening beyond Asia to the U.S., Europe, the Middle East, and Latin America. In May, exports to the U.S. rose 32% year-on-year, while combined exports to nine European countries surged 70%, with the U.K. up 114% and the Netherlands up 161%. Poland alone exceeded $50 million in monthly exports.
Sourcing context
Offline retail expansion is a key driver: from 2026, Korean beauty brands will enter major U.S. chains including Ulta Beauty, Costco, and Target, where over 85% of beauty sales occur offline. Product categories are also diversifying from basic skincare into color cosmetics, body care, hair care, and fragrances. Hair care exports reached a record $478 million in 2025, up 15.7%, with treatments and essences growing 21.6%—outpacing basic shampoos.
What buyers should watch
For importers and distributors, the convergence of biotech platform licensing and beauty export expansion creates dual sourcing opportunities. In pharma, watch for ADC and platform technology deals from firms like LegoChem Biosciences, ABL Bio, and Alteogen. In beauty, monitor the ramp-up of offline distribution in Western markets and the rise of functional hair care and color cosmetics. The sustained growth in U.S. and European exports suggests strong demand for Korean OEM and finished products across both medical aesthetics and consumer beauty segments.
