South Korean small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are driving a record-breaking surge in cosmetics exports, with the January-May cumulative total reaching $4.09 billion, up 28.6% year-on-year. This accounts for over 72% of the country's total cosmetics exports of $5.66 billion, signaling a major shift in supply-chain dynamics that overseas buyers and distributors should monitor closely.
Export growth and market share
According to the Ministry of SMEs and Startups, exports of four key consumer goods by SMEs reached $9.58 billion in the first five months of 2026, up 16.4% year-on-year. Cosmetics led the growth, with SME exports alone hitting $4.09 billion. The number of SME exporters in these categories rose 5.2% to 27,000, outperforming large and mid-sized companies in export growth rates.
Regional expansion and key markets
Beyond traditional strongholds in North America and Asia, Korean cosmetics are gaining traction in Europe and Latin America. Exports to Europe surged 61.1%, with notable increases in Poland ($190 million, +88.7%), the Netherlands ($110 million, +205%), and the UK ($110 million, +92.2%). Latin American exports jumped 153.5%, led by Brazil. Russia also saw an 18.1% rise to $170 million.
What buyers should watch
The ministry highlighted that K-beauty's success is now extending beyond basic skincare and makeup to masks and body products, broadening the product range available for sourcing. For overseas importers and distributors, this means a more diverse and innovative pipeline of SME-driven products, often with faster turnaround and customization capabilities compared to larger conglomerates.
Regulatory and channel signals
Deputy Minister Noh Yong-seok stated, "K-beauty has established itself as a new export success model, based on the innovation and diversity of SMEs harmonized with the production and distribution infrastructure of large companies." He added that the government plans to expand policy support to replicate this model in food and fashion sectors, potentially creating cross-category sourcing opportunities for buyers.
