Estée Lauder Cos. is forming a North America Fragrance Cluster to capture a larger share of the competitive prestige fragrance market. The company has appointed Vérane de Marffy as senior vice president, general manager of fragrances, North America, effective Monday, to lead the cluster's acceleration.
Strategic cluster formation
De Marffy will directly manage Kilian Paris and Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle in the region, with responsibility for driving top- and bottom-line growth, strengthening local relevance, and building long-term brand equity strategies. She will also oversee Jo Malone London, Tom Ford, and Balmain Beauty, partnering closely with current brand leads.
Executive background

De Marffy began her career at L'Oréal, holding global and regional roles across prestige fragrance, makeup, and skin care brands. Her experience includes global deputy general manager for Ralph Lauren Fragrances; senior vice president of marketing for Yves Saint Laurent Beauty USA; senior vice president of marketing for Lancôme USA; and general manager USA for Ralph Lauren, Azzaro, Maison Margiela, and Atelier Cologne. Most recently, she served as chief marketing officer at William Grant & Sons.
Market context and growth signals
Tara Simon, president of the Americas, said: "Fragrance continues to be the belle of the ball. It is a fast-growing category and attracting new and younger consumers at a clip. It is also bringing a new level of fun and creativity, with consumers embracing scent layering, investing in entire scent wardrobes, and trying and buying minis and other new formats." Simon added that the fragrance fervor is directly lifting Estée Lauder brands, and the company has invested to meet demand in innovation, creative, marketing, retail presence, and talent. The company's fragrance sales grew by 10 percent in the third quarter.
Competitive landscape

Despite growth, Estée Lauder's fragrance offering is not as broad as some competitors. Data from predictive commerce insights platform Daash Intelligence showed that YSL Beauty, licensed by L'Oréal, was the number-one brand by prestige fragrance sales in April, with four of the top 10 fragrances sold during the month. The prospect of broadening its fragrance offering was thought to be one of the driving factors behind merger talks with Puig, which ended last month.
What buyers should watch
For distributors and retailers in the North American prestige fragrance market, Estée Lauder's cluster formation signals a more focused competitive push. The appointment of a senior leader with deep L'Oréal and luxury brand experience suggests the company will intensify efforts to gain shelf space and consumer mindshare. Buyers should monitor how this restructuring affects brand positioning, distribution strategies, and potential new product launches from the Estée Lauder fragrance portfolio.
